Esther Mworgu: Seventh-day Adventist athlete wins gold for Nigeria at Commonwealth Games

Nigerian para powerlifter Esther Nworgu delivered an unforgettable performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, securing Nigeria’s first gold medal of the competition in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event.

The 24-year-old Seventh-day Adventist athlete dominated the stage by shattering the Games record twice in quick succession—first lifting 118 kilograms before outdoing herself with a remarkable 123-kilogram lift to lock in her victory.

Nworgu’s historic feat drew widespread praise from both sports officials and faith leaders. Onyebuchi Opara, president of the Eastern Nigeria Union Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, commended her as a shining example of discipline, humility, and dedication.

He noted that her success brings great honor to Nigeria while serving as an inspiring testament to how hard work, perseverance, and trust in God can lead to extraordinary achievements.

Esther’s achievement reminds us that with commitment and hard work, God can use our gifts to create impact and inspire others. Her success is proof of the values we uphold as a church—excellence, discipline, humility, and service,” he posited.

Your victory is a testimony that inspires young people and reminds everyone that challenges do not define our destiny. Through dedication and trust in God, greatness can be achieved,” he added.

Reflecting on her journey, Nworgu attributed her gold medal to months of intense preparation, personal sacrifice, and vital backing from Nigeria’s National Sports Commission.

She used her platform to offer a powerful message of encouragement to others, particularly individuals living with physical disabilities, urging them never to let external limitations define their destiny.

Rooted in her Christian faith, Nworgu reminded everyone to discover their personal gifts, pursue their dreams with all their strength, and let their potential shine.
