The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church in Uganda has declared its unwavering commitment to the sanctity of the Sabbath, following a government directive declaring Saturday as a National Cleaning Day.
In an official message released on July 24, 2026, Pr. Kajoba Samuel, President of the Uganda Union Mission, acknowledged the government’s noble goal of promoting a cleaner environment.
However, he emphasised that Saturday remains a divine day set aside strictly for rest, worship and fellowship as ordained by Scripture.
“While the Seventh-day Adventist Church fully supports initiatives that promote a clean and healthy environment, we remain committed to the sanctity of the Sabbath as ordained by God,” the statement partly reads.
“According to the scripture, the Sabbath is God’s holy day, observed from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. During these sacred hours, God calls for His people to cease from ordinary work and dedicate the time wholly to worship in communion with Him,” the statement further states.
To resolve the conflict, Church leadership is actively engaging government officials to protect the constitutional freedom of worship.
The Church has formally proposed that Adventist faithful carry out their community cleaning duties on alternative days, such as Fridays or Sundays.
Calling for unity and peace, Pr. Kajoba urged members across the country to remain calm, prayerful, and respectful toward state authorities while discussions continue. He expressed strong confidence that a amicable, God-honoring resolution will soon be reached.
