REPENTANCE AND FORGIVENESS| Adult Sabbath School | Week 10 | 2nd Quarter 2026

HIGHLIGHT: Identifying our sins in response to the Holy Spirit’s promptings and surrendering self in repentance are vital parts of having a thriving relationship with God. Knowing that we are completely forgiven and covered by Jesus’ robe of righteousness is the most transformative experience for a human being. Not only do we feel the weight of sin lifted, but we feel the love of God surround us as we are drawn closer to Him. This binds us to God, strengthens us spiritually, and compels us to love Him with every fiber of our being.

Memory Text: 1 John 1:9 NKJV
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

SABBATH: INTRODUCTION
Even God’s covenant people stumbled when faith gave way to fear. While Moses lingered on the mountain, Israel grew impatient and chose a visible idol over the unseen God. Exodus 32–34 tells a sobering story of failure—but also of mercy. Anchored in the promise of 1 John 1:9, this program explores repentance, confession, and God’s unfailing forgiveness. Sin is real, but grace is greater. Discover how easily hearts drift, why repentance matters, and how the Cross makes restoration possible. No matter how far we fall, forgiveness is always within reach for the repentant soul.

SUNDAY: THE RUSH OF LIFE
A story is told of a married woman who, on one Sabbath morning, found herself doing the chores such as cleaning, washing and baking that she normally did during the week. In and of themselves, doing these chores seemed right, but they were being done at the time which she had set aside to commune with her God. Feeling sad about how she had chosen everything else aside God on that morning, she reminds us of Martha in the Bible who was as well distracted with serving instead of enjoying Jesus’ presence at her house, unlike Mary who did.
We are equally distracted from spending time with God due to the busyness of life. However, we ought to be intentional about growing our relationship with God and it starts by calling out to Jesus when we feel the pain brought by separation from God.

MONDAY: HOLY SPIRIT PROMPTINGS
One of the gifts that God gave us is the Holy Spirit. He is the One who enables us to realise how sinful we are and He moves us to amend our relationship with God which sin repeatedly destroys. With His help, we do not justify sin, but rather, we are genuinely sorry for having hurt God. This leads us to direct our attention to the greatest manifestation of God’s love which is the sacrifice at the Cross of Calvary, by which our relationship with God is corrected through our faith in Jesus Christ. For us to be able to remain connected to Jesus Christ by the help of the Holy Spirit, we need to completely detest the cherished sins that separate us from Him who is the true Vine with us as the branches.

TUESDAY: REAL REPENTANCE
True sorrow for sin comprises having sincere pain for our sins and honestly deciding to turn away from them. With each new day, we are nearing the Second coming of Jesus Christ, therefore, we ought to use this time to make things right with Him. True repentance results into total transformation. It is for this reason John the Baptist told the people of his time to repent of their sins in preparation to welcome Jesus Christ. Likewise, Jesus Christ urges us in His word to repent of our sins in preparation for His second coming and this means surrendering our hearts and lives to God so that He can do the pruning so as our characters are sharpened enough to behold Him.

WEDNESDAY: SUFFICIENT GRACE
When we confess of our sins, God promises to forgive us of our unrighteousness and is ready to cleanse us. It is by His unmerited favour that we are able to humbly approach His throne. Unable to do this on our own, Jesus Christ knocks at the door of our hearts and once we invite Him in by faith, He is ready to carry our burdens. We ought to keep the Cross before us and our eyes turned to Jesus Christ. Let’s run to Jesus and exchange our sins and burdens for His righteousness, and be assured of eternity with Him in glory.

THURSDAY: THE MOST EXPENSISVE ROBE
Right from the beginning of the age, when Adam and Eve sinned, it was God who initiated reconciliation of the relationship they had with Him. Having realised their nakedness, they sewed fig leaves. However, God provided cloths of animal skin for them, symbolising the need of a sacrifice so that the relationship with Him is mended. Jesus Christ is the Only one who can reconcile us with God, and this is why by believing in His sacrifice at Calvary by faith, His blood washes us clean and by doing so, we accept His robe of righteousness. This robe is extended to each of us who will accept Jesus Christ to work out salvation in our lives through genuine repentance and total surrender to His will.

FRIDAY: FURTHER THOUGHT
We sow, reap, break up the hard soil, and seek God to come close to us. The hard soil of our hearts must be prepared and ready for the rain (Holy Spirit) to fall on it. God can give us the desire to prepare the soil, but, ultimately, a relationship with Him is a partnership. We have to turn our heads toward Him, reach out to Him, and cling onto Him. Then He works in us to do the rest.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS;

  1. When did you last hear a rebuke or a call to repentance? How did you respond? Spend some time right now in prayer, asking God to soften your heart and open your ears to His voice in His word this week.
  2. Repentance leads to life(Acts 11:18) and is a vital part of growing in a relationship with God. In the process of surrender, repentance and allowing God to prune you, what step is most challenging for you?
  3. Reflect: we should daily clothe ourselves with Jesus’ robe of righteousness. What does this really mean, and how do we do this?
  4. How would you explain the precious gift of Christ’s robe of righteousness to a non-Christian or a new Believer?
