THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS | Adult Sabbath School | Lesson 2 | 3rd Quarter 2026

Memory Text: 1 Corinthians 1:18 NIV

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to us who are being saved its the power of God.”

Imagine walking into a bustling, sophisticated city where status, intellectual debate, and flashy public speaking dictate your worth. Welcome to ancient Corinth. In this world, crucifixion was not a religious symbol worn on a necklace; it was a graphic tool of Roman state terror, designed to humiliate and discard society’s worst.

Yet, when the Apostle Paul arrived in Corinth, he didn’t try to win over the elite with their own currency of complex philosophy or soaring rhetoric. Fresh off his experience in Athens—where meeting intellectuals on purely human terms yielded little fruit—Paul made a radical pivot. He decided to preach nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

This week’s Shalom Insights takes a deep dive into Lesson 2: The Message of the Cross, exploring how a symbol of absolute shame became the ultimate power source for the early Church and why it remains our only anchor today.

SUNDAY: THE GOSPEL OF THE CROSS

Paul made the Cross the absolute center of his preaching because human intellect and flashy rhetoric can never solve the sin problem.

Moving away from the sophisticated philosophical debates he attempted in Athens, Paul chose to rely strictly on divine wisdom in Corinth. The lesson reminds us that the Cross shows both the worst about human nature and the best about God’s love.

Takeaway: Keep Jesus and His Cross at the centre of your life, because only He can save, transform, and give eternal life.

MONDAY: FOOLISHNESS TO THOSE WHO ARE PERISHING

To the world, the gospel sounds completely backwards. In the original Greek, Paul uses the word mōria (madness or folly) to describe how secular minds perceive the crucifixion.

The Jews wanted a conquering military king, and the Greeks wanted high philosophy; neither could accept a crucified Savior. Yet, Paul refused to water down the message just to make it popular.

Takeaway: Keep trusting the power of the Cross and faithfully share Jesus, because God is still preparing people’s hearts to receive His truth.

TUESDAY: POWER TO THOSE WHO ARE BEING SAVED

While skeptics see the Cross as absurdity, believers experience it as the literal power of God. By choosing to accept Jesus’ sacrifice by faith, our sins are forgiven, we are reconciled to God, and an internal transformation begins from the inside out.

Takeaway: Have faith and choose to trust Jesus every day, because only His grace can save you and give you eternal life.

WEDNESDAY: A MESSIAH CRUCIFIED

God’s plans often catch us by surprise because He works in ways that defy human expectations. A crucified Messiah was an unprecedented concept, but it demonstrated exactly how far God was willing to go to rescue humanity.

When our own lives do not go as planned, Calvary stands as proof that God’s unconventional ways are always best.

Takeaway: Trust God’s way even when you do not understand it, because His plans are always guided by perfect wisdom and love.

THURSDAY: CHRIST, THE POWER AND WISDOM OF GOD

Human wisdom isn’t inherently evil, but it is utterly useless when it tries to replace God’s plan for salvation. The combined intellect of all human history could never conceive a way to redeem humanity from sin.

God solved the problem completely through Christ, proving that even “the foolishness of God” is infinitely wiser and stronger than anything humanity can achieve.

Takeaway: Believers must focus their witnessing entirely on Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Keeping Calvary at the centre of our personal witnessing is the only way to truly convict hearts and bring unity to the church.

CONCLUSION

As Ellen G. White highlights in The Acts of the Apostles, capturing the deep message of the Cross completely revolutionized Paul’s identity. He transformed from a bitter persecutor into a tireless messenger because he personally experienced how much God loved him at Calvary.

When the church faces division, or when your personal faith is questioned, look back at this week’s memory text:

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” – 1 Corinthians 1:18

It is the only narrative that changes hearts forever. Wish you a Happy Sabbath!!!
