Scripture Reading
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4–5
Reflection: Love as a Choice, Not a Feeling
In a world that often defines love as a fleeting emotion or a romantic spark, the Bible presents a definition that is far more robust and sacrificial.
Love as learnt from the Bible, is not something we merely fall into but rather a deliberate choice to act in the best interest of another, regardless of the cost to ourselves.
1. Love is Active
The Bible defines love using verbs, not just adjectives. According to 1 Corinthians 13, love is something that does. It waits patiently, it acts with kindness and it actively protects. It is a commitment to behave in a way that reflects God’s character, even when our feelings might suggest otherwise.
2. Love is Selfless
The ultimate roadmap of love is found in the life of Christ. The Bible tells us that “God is love” (1 John 4:8) and that He demonstrated this love by sending His Son while we were still sinners.
Love as learnt from the Bible, does not ask, “What is in it for me?” Instead, it asks, “How can I serve you?” It is “not self-seeking,” meaning it prioritizes the needs of the neighbor, the spouse, the friend, and even the enemy over the ego.
3. Love is Enduring
Human love often fluctuates based on performance or mood. However, Biblical love “never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8). It is a bond of perfection that holds everything together.
It chooses to forgive and keeps no record of wrongs, releasing the debt of the past to build a bridge toward the future.
Practical Application
Today, challenge yourself to move beyond the feeling of love and practice the action of love.
- Is there someone to whom you need to show patience?
- Is there an area where you need to set aside pride to serve someone else?
- Can you let go of a record of wrongs that you have been holding onto?
Closing Prayer
Kind and loving Father in heaven, we thank You for being the source of true love. We confess that our love is often selfish and limited. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit today so that we may love others as You have loved us patiently, kindly, and unconditionally. May our lives be a reflection of Your heart to everyone we meet, I have prayed believing and trusting in the mighty name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, Amen.
